Embassy of Switzerland in Beijing

The Swiss embassy in Beijing is located at Chancery: No. 3, Dong Wu Jie, San Li Tun where its primary purpose is to represent the interests of Switzerland in China. The way it does this is through the ambassador who represents his government in any discussions with the government of China. Although this is the most high profile aspect of the embassies duties most of the work is actually much more routine. The bulk of the work being done by the embassy is done on behalf of Swiss visitors to China, offering them advice, helping when they run into difficulties, that sort of thing. The embassy also has an important role to play in encouraging Chinese business in Switzerland. Whether it is helping to sell Swiss products in China or getting Chinese investment for a business in Switzerland or even just promoting tourism the embassy has a role to play in promoting the country. It is also the place that Chinese citizens will need to go if they want to get visas to visit Switzerland.

Switzerland is a relatively small country located in the European alps. Bordered by France, Germany, Austria and Italy Switzerland is famous for it's neutrality. The country is not part of any alliances and has not participated in a war in nearly two hundred years. Maintaining this neutral position is expensive and difficult as it requires that all males serve in the armed forces and a heavy tax burden. This is part of what makes Switzerland one of the most expensive countries in the world in which to live. However Switzerland also has one of the highest standards of living in the world.

The largest industry in Switzerland is tourism, not surprisingly for a country located in the mountains skiing is a major attraction. The Swiss also have a well developed high tech industry as well as a large manufacturing industry. Because the Swiss don't participate in most international agreements they often need to manufacture items for themselves that other countries would import. This is why Switzerland has a large number of defence contractors, the almost always build their own military equipment rather than import it. Switzerland is also well known as a major banking center.

As a neutral country Switzerland normally has good relations with other countries and China is no exception. Since they don't take sides in disputes the Swiss have managed to avoid getting dragged into most international disputes. Switzerland were the first western country to actually recognize China, a good twenty years before anybody else, this has certainly helped the two countries to develop a good relationship, with china investing in swiss business and the other way around before most other western nations did. Like most western countries Switzerland would like to increase the amount of business that it does with China and this will likely keep relations between the two very healthy.
