Embassy of Iraq in Beijing
The embassy of Iraq in Beijing is located at Chancery: No. 25, Xiu Shui Bei Jie, Jian Guo Men Wai, it's job is to represent the interests of Iraq in China. The job of the Iraqi embassy is a little bit different from that of other embassies because of situation in Iraq. Normally the embassy would spend much of it's time processing visa applications and promoting the countries business and tourism advantages. With Iraq being the scene of an on going war there are no tourists and very little business for the embassy to deal with. The primary role of the Iraqi embassy therefore is arranging aid for the country. Iraq will need large amounts of foreign aid in order to rebuild and the embassy plays a part in helping to arrange this. The embassy also offers assistance to Iraqi citizens who are in China, most Iraqis who are in China are there as refugees and they need a considerable amount of assistance.
Iraq is a country in the middle east that should be one of the wealthiest in the world since it sits on top of very large oil deposits. Unfortunately the country has been at war for many years now, with the current war just the most recent in a long string of them. This has destroyed the Iraqi economy as they can't drill for oil, even before the current war there were sanctions that made impossible for them to export oil. Iraq is a devastated country involved in a war that is unlikely to end any time soon, so the chances of the situation improving in the near future are not good.
Iraq is Muslim country but as Sunni Muslims they follow a different branch of the religion than there neighbours. This has led to a war with Iran as well as to civil war within the country. Iraq's biggest problem for many years was their government. Saddam Hussein as dictator got Iraq involved in a number of wars, some about religion but usually about oil and this has led the country to disaster. Following the removal of Saddam Hussein from power it was hoped that things would improve but it hasn't happened as Iraq is now basically fighting a civil war for control of the country. It is unlikely that things are going to improve any time soon.
Relations between China and Iraq are surprisingly friendly given the way Iraq is viewed by the rest of the world. China chose not to participate in the war in Iraq and were opposed to the invasion.
It has been Chinese policy in recent years to try to draw countries that were not aligned with the United States into China's sphere of influence in an attempt to enhance their influence and world standing.
They have been largely successful with this program and Iraq is one of the countries they have attracted. There is very little trade between the two countries because of the war but China has invested a large amount of aid into Iraq.
