India is the second most populous country in the world after China. Located on the Indian sub continent in southern Asia it has one of the oldest civilizations in the world. It is also one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse nations in the world. There are dozens of different languages spoken in India as well as many different religions. Because of India's large size the climate and terrain vary dramatically from one part of the country to another. This gives the impression that India is actually several different countries. This has been a problem for India, after being a British colony for many years they have found it hard to come together as one country because there are so many differences.
Given it's large economy India should someday have one of the largest economies in the world, however their growth has lagged behind the other developing countries with large populations. The reasons for this aren't entirely clear since India boasts a very highly educated and skilled work force and has a thriving high tech industry. They do seem to have lost out to other developing countries when it comes to creating a manufacturing industry and this may be the reason that they have not kept pace. Nevertheless at some point in the not to distant future it is fully expected that India will be a major world power.
The relationship between India and China is one that has been constantly changing. As two large nations that share a border disputes have been fairly commonplace. Even today the exact location of the border in some areas is
not clear. Recently however the two countries have begun cooperating as they both attempt to expand their economies and catch up to the developed world, with china and India both spending a lot of money on building and maintaining their infrastructure. This has led to an increase in trade and a much better relationship between the two countries. Whether or not this continues once they have reached a higher level of development is an open question but for now they get along quite well.
