Embassy of Cuba in Beijing
The job of the Cuban embassy in Beijing which is located at Chancery: No.1, Xiu Shui Nan Jie, Jian Guo Men Wai is to represent Cuba's interests in China. The biggest job of the embassy these days is to promote business between the two countries, by encouraging investment in Cuba by the Chinese and promoting Cuban products in China. Given that Cuba's economy is heavily dependent on tourism encouraging the Chinese to visit the island is also a big part of the job. The embassy also provides assistance to Cuban citizens in China who find themselves needing help. Chinese people who wish to visit Cuba will also need to contact the embassy in order to arrange visas.
Cuba is an island nation in Caribbean just off the coast of the United States. It is one of the few remaining communist countries in the world and this has brought it into conflict with the United States. The United States has had an embargo in place against Cuba for decades that has seriously damaged the countries economy and made relations between the two very tense. The embargo was the result of Cuba becoming a communist country and aligning itself with the Soviet Union. The US, did not like having a Soviet ally that close to them and went about trying to topple the government. The attempt failed and even after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba remains communist and the embargo remains in place.
The Cuban economy has suffered considerably from the US embargo as the United States would be their natural trading partner. Unable to export many of their products, which are mainly agricultural the economy has stagnated for years, especially since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Cubans also can't import anything from the United States which is why you will see cars from the 1950's in Cuba they can't get any newer ones. The only bright spot in the Cuban economy is the growing tourism business, although it hurts that Americans can't visit, there are plenty of tourists from other places.
As two of the last remaining communist countries Cuba and China have a very close relationship. They have become even closer since the break up of the Soviet Union.
Cuba needs China as a trading partner because of the American Embargo and China have been actively courting third world countries like Cuba, while taking advantage of their best business markets. As China becomes a major power they have been trying to extend their influence and one of the ways that they have been doing this is by trying to win third world countries in Africa and Latin America over to their side. They have been quite successful at this, and a number of countries that used to turn to the United States or Europe are now turning to China. Cuba is one of those countries if for no other reason that the United States have left them with no other choice.
